The Minnesota Watercolor Society is excited to welcome Dan Wiemer to it's September 10 meeting. Dan’s distinctive technique combines opaque acrylics with transparent watercolor to create stylized landscapes influenced by printmakers and batik artists.
“I am obsessed with design, negative shape making, and the ruggedness of the north,” Dan writes. Rather than replicating a landscape exactly as he sees it, he prefers to interpret it, often experimenting with shapes and textures to discover the poetic rhythm within a scene.
“Rhythm, to me, is connecting highlight shapes with linked shadow shapes in an interesting way that creates movement and pathways for the eye,” explains Dan.
These artistic interests led Dan to study Canadian painters such as Tom Thomson, whose iconic painting The Jack Pine inspired him, as well as the Group of Seven, who worked primarily in the early 1900s. Dan describes them as graphic designers turned illustrators turned painters—a path that closely mirrors his own artistic journey.
Dan has painted in China, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and throughout the United States. He is a past president of the Minnesota Watercolor Society and has received numerous awards for his work.

Dan uses the following supplies:
Watercolors
Cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna, Cadmium or Windsor red, alizarin crimson or permanent rose, sap green, viridian, and Paynes gray or neutral tint (for value studies).
Acrylic paints
Raw sienna, burnt sienna, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, light ultramarine blue (all Golden brand), plus acrylic matte medium.
Brushes
Variety of watercolor and acrylic brushes of different sizes, along with a pinky-sized synthetic round for masking.
Paper
100% cotton rag, 140# Arches cold or hot pressed, 11x15 quarter sheets. Softer papers are not sufficient for Dan’s techniques.
