The Minnesota Watercolor Society is excited to welcome David R. Smith to its October 22 meeting.
“I actually started my watercolor journey about thirty years ago when I was studying Chinese brush painting,” said David. “It was a great introduction to the watercolor medium because it taught me to be brave.”
By surrendering control and working with the watercolor, beautiful results often occur naturally. To make his paintings feel alive, David employs a variety of techniques, including wet-into-wet painting, glazing, pouring, spattering, and spraying. These approaches not only keep his work fresh but also create unexpected color mingling and exciting textures.
David’s favorite subjects are found in nature, and he enjoys traveling abroad as well as exploring state and national parks for inspiration. “Like many of you, I’m on a watercolor journey where I’m always hungry for learning and new experiences, while enjoying the versatility of this amazing fluid medium.”
David is an internationally recognized watercolor artist and instructor. He is the recipient of the prestigious Skyledge Award, the highest honor presented by the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. His work has earned numerous Best of Show awards and has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad.

David uses the following materials:
Paper
Fabriano Artistico 140# rough (sometimes cold press), or Arches, Hahnemuhle, etc. Fabriano Artistico creates textures and paints lift easily, working well with David’s techniques.
Paints
Quinacridone gold, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, Phthalo blue, cobalt teal (Qor), alizarin crimson, raw umber, lavender (Holbein), indigo, white gouache, and Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White. He sometimes uses Winsor lemon, Winsor red, Opera (Holbein), burnt sienna, dioxazine purple, neutral tint, and lunar black (Daniel Smith).
Brushes
Escoda Round (Perla) size 12, a 1” or 1.5” flat brush (like Miller’s Pseudo Sable Mottler), and a large round or mop (Princeton Aqua Elite Quill #6 or Escoda Prado size 16).
